Magic of touches…

Nirmalya Saha, Psychosocial and motivational blogger. Wisdom coach.

Well, entire world is feeling this right now. Especially first world countries where molecular family concept and overburden of professional practices are common habit. Even during this lock down, we are also feeling such pressure at times.

It’s called touch starvation in other words. When we meet somebody we generally shake hands, pat on shoulder or hug. These are sober touches which transforms positive vibe and feel of comfort from one person to other. Be it personal interaction or business meeting, a tight hug or more pressure on shaking hands can send a sense of cooperation and guarantee. It always tightens bonding.

When someone don’t have such option for a considerable time, he/she starts to feel typical withdrawal symptoms like missing sympathy, empathy and healthy emotional bond. This may be the simplest defination of skin hunger.

But it does not include sensual touches like holding hands for a long time, back scratching or undertable foot rubbing.

Touch is very effective mechanism to reduce stress, anxiety and even hypertension or fast heart pumping for excitement. Because when two hands touch each other with a normal speed of 3 to 5 cm per second, it stimulates secretion of oxytocin, the love hormone. It transmits feel good vibe from one person to another. As a result natural antidepressant serotonin and pleasure chemical dopamine start to function and gradually mental state starts to chenge due to chemical reactions. That’s why close company of other person is very vital in our life.

Well, in case of a lonely person it’s a matter of mindset. It’s very important to know which sets of thoughts the person is cultivating in conscious mind. That’s the deciding factor to undergo some remedial therapy. There may be some depressions, confusions, anxiety for uncertainty etc. Since I’ve no option to interact with you personally I’m stating some common practices that can reduce skin hunger for a lonely person.

It’s totally outbound exercises that anyone can avail. But a person with continuous depression or perpetual stress can use these methods to get rid of starvation. Let’s check out.

  1. Try out a massage. Whether you ask a loved one or visit a professional, massages are a proven way to relax and enjoy the benefits of another person’s touch.

  2. Spend some quality time with animals.Often all too happy to cuddle, pets are the ideal soothing mechanism. If you don’t have one, why not visit a cat cafe?

  3. Get your nails done. Easily overlooked, a manicure or pedicure will give you the human contact you need, and a new look to boot.

  4. Visit the hair salon. If you don’t fancy a cut, book yourself a wash and blow-dry for ultimate relaxation.

  5. Learn to dance. Certain dances like the tango don’t work without skin-to-skin contact. Not only will you put an end to your touch starvation, you’ll also pick up a rad new skill.

  6. Go to a cuddle party. Yes, these are real. And no, they’re not as strange as they sound. If socializing while cuddling isn’t for you, try enlisting the help of a professional cuddler instead.

Last but not the least is a strange study on comprehensive psychology reveals that for persons feeling lonely and helpless, a small touch even from a stranger can affect mood swing in affirmative way. For a minimum amount of time a sense of completeness can give birth a heavenly feeling that can be stored as a fond memory to cherish.
